Made With Care

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

Going deeper

A potter friend once showed me a bowl she had thrown that morning. It was not perfect. There was a slight lean to one side, a thumbprint pressed near the rim. She turned it slowly in her hands, not embarrassed by the marks, but glad. 'You can see where I held it,' she said. The marks were not flaws to hide. They were signs that someone had been present, working, unwilling to walk away until the shape was true.

Paul writes these words to people who had good reason to feel discarded. Just before this verse, he reminds them they were once far off, without much to bring. Then comes the turn. He calls them God's workmanship, made in Christ for good works already prepared for them. In the old world, being on the margins meant being counted out. Paul says the opposite. You are the crafted thing, made on purpose, with a future already laid out ahead of you.

You may carry marks from where life pressed hard. Today, try seeing one of them not as proof you are ruined, but as proof you are still being held and shaped. When you do the next small, honest task in front of you, do it as someone made with care, not as someone making up for something.

A word in the Greek

ποίημα

poiēma · workmanship, a crafted work

This is the word for something made by hand with intention, and it is where we get our word 'poem'. It does not describe a mass-produced item but a piece someone laboured over and cared about. Paul uses it for you. You are not an accident on a shelf; you are a work still being shaped.

Questions to sit with

  • Where have I been treating my marks as flaws to hide rather than signs I am still being held?
  • What is one good work already in front of me today that I could walk into simply as someone made on purpose?
  • What would change in me if I truly believed I was crafted with care, not left over?

A prayer

Father, thank you that you call me your workmanship and not a mistake. Help me to see my life today as something you are still shaping with care. Lead me into the small, good work in front of me, and let me walk in it without fear.

Carry this with you

You are a crafted work, made on purpose and still held.

Soli Deo Gloria — to God alone be the glory.
