One Step, Then Another

Today’s Scripture Philippians 3:12-16the day’s verse: Philippians 3:14 (ESV)

“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 3:14 (ESV)

Going deeper

There is a man who trains for a long-distance run without any hope of winning. He is slow. On some mornings his knees ache and the road looks endless. But he keeps lacing his shoes and stepping out the door, one street at a time. He is not chasing a medal. He is simply refusing to stop. Over months, the distance he can cover quietly grows, though he could never point to the day it changed.

Paul wrote these words from prison, near the end of a hard life. Just before this, he admitted plainly that he had not yet arrived, that he was not perfect. Yet he does not sit down in regret. He speaks like a runner leaning towards the finish, pressing on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. His past, both its failures and its achievements, is behind him. What matters is the direction he is still facing.

You do not have to arrive today. You only have to keep facing forward. Whatever went wrong yesterday, or years ago, it does not decide the direction of your feet this morning. Choose one small thing that moves you towards the life you long for, and do just that one thing today. That is pressing on. That is enough.

A word in the Greek

διώκω

diōkō · to press on, to pursue with purpose

In everyday Greek, diōkō was the word for a runner chasing down the finish, or a person following hard after something they truly wanted. It is active and forward-leaning, not frantic. Notice it is a present-tense verb, an ongoing thing, not a single heroic sprint. For you, it means today's small, faithful movement counts as pressing on, even when the goal still feels far off.

Questions to sit with

  • What is one small step forward I could take today, without waiting to feel ready?
  • Where am I sitting down in regret when I could simply face forward again?
  • What would it mean for me to see today's ordinary effort as pressing on, not falling short?

A prayer

Father, I am not where I hoped to be, and some days the road feels long. Help me to face forward this morning and take the next small step. Thank you that you call me onward, and that you walk this road with me. Keep my feet moving in your direction.

Carry this with you

You need not arrive today; you only need to keep facing forward.

Soli Deo Gloria — to God alone be the glory.
