Jesus is telling a story to people who had grumbled that he kept the wrong company. A younger son had asked for his share early, gone far away, and lost it all. Now he is walking home with a rehearsed speech, ready to ask for the lowest place.
He never gets to finish it. While he was still a long way off — dusty, unsure, half-expecting a closed door — his father saw him. That means the father had been watching the road. And the father runs. In that world, an older man did not run; it was undignified. But dignity is set aside for the sake of a child coming home. The embrace comes before the apology.
Wherever you are on the road today — near or far, hopeful or ashamed — this is the picture Jesus paints of how you are met. Not with a folded-arms wait, but with someone already moving toward you. You are seen long before you arrive.

splanchnizomai · to be moved with compassion from deep within
This word reaches down into the body — it speaks of feeling something in your very core, the place where love and ache are held together. The father does not offer polite sympathy from a distance; he is moved in his depths and it moves his feet. The welcome waiting for you is not a duty being performed, but a love that cannot stay still.

- Where am I still 'a long way off', rehearsing a speech I may not need to give?
- What would it mean for me to be met before I have explained or fixed myself?
- Who might I run toward today, before they finish apologising?
A prayer
God who watches the road, thank you that you see me while I am still far off. Meet me before I have the right words. Move toward me, and help me walk home.
You are seen long before you arrive, and loved before you explain.
