Monday can arrive with a quiet question underneath it: what am I even for? When your history has been rough, or your restart is slow, that question can get loud.
Into that, Paul sets a startling word. Before he says anything about what you must do, he tells you what you are: God’s workmanship. Not his afterthought. Not damaged goods on a discount shelf. A made thing, crafted on purpose.
Then comes the gentle turn. There are ‘good works … prepared beforehand’. Your purpose is not a prize you must win by being impressive; it is a path already laid, waiting for you to walk it — one ordinary, honest step at a time. Made with care, and made for something.

poiēma · something made; a work of craft
Poiēma is the word for a made thing shaped with intention — and it is the root of the English word ‘poem’. Paul uses it of a person only here in all his letters. You are not mass-produced or left over; you are his poiēma, handiwork with care worked into it, and there is good already prepared for you to step into.

- Where have I started to believe I am an afterthought rather than something made with care?
- If good works are ‘prepared beforehand’, what one small good thing is in front of me today?
- How would I carry myself into this week if I truly believed I am handiwork, not a mistake?
A prayer
Maker, thank you that I am your handiwork and not an accident. Where I feel useless or discarded, remind me I was made with care. Show me the good, ordinary step you have prepared for me today.
You are not an accident to be tolerated, but handiwork made with care — and good is already prepared for you.
