Going deeper
Think of the person who sat with you on a hard night. They probably did not fix anything. They did not have the right words. But they stayed, and made the tea, and let the silence be. Years later, that is what you remember — not advice, but the nearness.
Paul is writing to a church in Corinth, and he begins his letter not with instruction but with a blessing about comfort. He had been through real affliction; he does not pretend otherwise. Yet he notices something he cannot un-see: that the comfort he received in his own trouble did not stop with him. It became something he could hand on. Notice the small, generous word 'any'. The comfort you are given does not have to match another person's trouble exactly to be useful to them. Being met once teaches your hands how to meet someone else.
So today, you might let one act of kindness travel through you. Not a grand gesture — a message, a cup of coffee set down beside someone quiet, a chair pulled a little closer. You are not the source of the comfort; you are simply passing on what you have known.
παράκλησις
paraklēsis · comfort, a coming alongside
Paraklēsis is not a distant sympathy shouted from across the room. It is built from words meaning 'to call near' — the picture of someone drawing a chair up beside you and staying. It is the same root behind the name Jesus gave the Spirit, the one who comes alongside. When you have been comforted this way, you carry something you can now offer another.
Questions to sit with
- Who has drawn their chair near to me in a hard time, and what did their staying teach me?
- Where in my life today could I come alongside someone, without needing to fix anything?
- What comfort have I received that I have been carrying alone, that could now be passed on?
A prayer
Thank you for the times someone came near and stayed. Comfort me still where I ache, and make me gentle enough to sit beside another today. Let what I have received flow through my hands to someone who needs it.
The comfort you have been given was never meant to stop with you.
