Going deeper
Think of a mug that has held coffee for years. The inside carries a brown stain no rinse quite lifts, and you begin to think that mark is simply what the cup is now. You stop expecting it to look any other way.
Paul writes to a church in Corinth that knew its own stains well. He has been speaking about how the love of Christ moves us, how he no longer judges people by outward appearances. And then he lands here: if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Not a repaired version of the old. Something new in kind. The word 'behold' is a nudge — look, notice this, it is really true. And notice he says 'anyone'. Not the impressive, not the ones with a clean record. Anyone.
So today, if there is one old label you keep speaking over yourself — 'I am the one who failed', 'I am too far gone' — set it down for a moment, the way you set a cup back on the table. You do not have to force a new feeling. Just let the possibility stand near you: something new may be quietly beginning.
καινός
kainos · new in kind and quality, not merely new in time
Greek has more than one word for 'new'. Some words mean recent, fresh off the shelf. But kainos means new in kind — something of a different quality altogether, not just the old thing given another coat of paint. When Paul reaches for this word, he is not saying you have been tidied up. He is saying something genuinely new has begun in you.

- What would it mean for me to believe that 'anyone' truly includes me today?
A prayer
God, I have carried old marks so long I forgot they could ever lift. Meet me here and make something new in me, gently, at your pace. Help me believe that your 'anyone' includes me. Amen.
