Today’s Scripture Romans 5:18-21the day’s verse: Romans 5:20 (ESV)
“Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.”
Romans 5:20 (ESV)
Going deeper
You have probably watched someone pour a coffee and keep pouring a moment too long. The cup fills, then the crema rises, then a little runs over the rim into the saucer. There is more than the cup can hold. It is a small, generous mess.
Paul is writing to people in Rome who knew the weight of failure — their own, and others'. Just before this line he has been talking about how one man's fall touched everyone, and how one man's obedience opens a wider door. He is not making light of what goes wrong. He names it plainly: sin increased. He does not pretend the scale is empty.
But then comes the turn. 'Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.' Notice he does not say grace kept pace, or grace just about covered it. Grace overflowed. It went past the mark. Whatever you have counted up against yourself — the tally you keep in the quiet — grace is not the same size as that tally. It is larger. It runs over.
Today, if you find yourself adding up your own failures, try setting the sum down for a moment. Not to deny it, but to place it inside something bigger. You are not measured by the size of your worst day. You are met by a mercy that pours past it.
ὑπερπερισσεύω
hyperperisseuō · to overflow beyond all measure
This word does not simply mean 'more'. It stacks two ideas together — 'over' and 'to abound' — so it means to spill over past the brim, to pour out until measuring stops mattering. Paul chooses it deliberately: whatever the weight on one side of the scale, grace does not merely match it, it floods past it.
Questions to sit with
- Where am I still keeping a private tally against myself?
- What would it mean for me to trust that grace is larger than that tally, not merely equal to it?
- Who around me might need to be met with the kind of grace that overflows rather than measures?
A prayer
If you would like to pray, you might say: God, I have carried my failures like a full cup. Pour something larger over them today. Help me believe that mercy runs past the mark, and let me be gentle with others as I am learning to receive it.
Whatever you are counting against yourself, grace is bigger and it overflows.
Soli Deo Gloria — to God alone be the glory.
