Going deeper
At the end of a long shift, someone shows you how to clean the portafilter properly. You think it looks fine. But they run the water through, and out comes the dark residue you never saw — the bitterness that would have quietly ruined the next cup. It isn't a scolding. It's a kindness. Nothing good can be poured through a vessel that still carries yesterday's grime. So you clean it, and it is ready to serve again in the morning.
John is writing to a young community, and he is honest with them. He says that if we claim we have no dirt, we only fool ourselves. But then he opens a door. He says that when we bring what is true into the light — confess it, name it — God is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. This is not God shaming us. It is God meeting honesty with mercy, and doing the deep cleaning we cannot do ourselves.
You do not have to carry the residue of yesterday into today. Confession here is simply telling God the truth about one thing, plainly, without excuses. Try it this morning over your first cup. Name the one thing weighing on you, and let the promise stand: forgiven, and cleansed. Then go into your day as a vessel made ready again — not defined by what was poured through you before.
καθαρίζω
katharizō · to cleanse, to make clean
This is a word about washing something until it is truly clean, not just tidied on the surface. It is the same idea used for a jug scrubbed free of old residue so fresh coffee can be poured in without spoiling. Notice it goes further than forgiveness, which cancels the debt; cleansing renews the vessel itself. You are not only pardoned but made ready again.

- What is the one thing I have been carrying that I have not yet said plainly to God?
- Where in my life do I need not just forgiveness, but the deeper cleaning that makes me ready again?
- What would it mean for me to begin today believing I am no longer defined by yesterday's residue?
A prayer
Father, I bring you the thing I have been hiding, and I say it plainly now. Thank you that you meet my honesty not with shame but with mercy. Forgive me, and cleanse what I cannot reach myself. Let me walk into this day made ready again.
Bring the one true thing into the light, and let mercy make you ready for today.
