Going deeper
There is a moment before something hard begins. You are standing at the door of an interview, or the first shift of a new job, or a conversation you have put off for weeks. Your hand is on the handle. Your heart is loud. Part of you wants to turn and walk the other way. In that small pause, what you long for is not a lecture. You long for someone beside you to say, quietly, that you are not doing this alone.
Isaiah was writing to people who felt scattered and afraid, far from home and unsure of the future. Into that fear God speaks. He calls them by an old family name and reminds them they are still his. Then come the words: 'fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.' Notice he does not scold them for being afraid. He simply promises his presence, and then piles on the help: 'I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.'
Whatever door you are standing at today, you can borrow these words. The promise is not that the hard thing disappears, but that you are held while you face it. So before you begin — the shift, the call, the small brave step — say one line to yourself: I am not doing this alone. Then put your hand on the handle. The strength you need may not feel like your own, and that is exactly the point.

The word carries the sense of making something firm enough to hold weight. It is not a quick burst of feeling but a steadying from the inside, so that shaking knees find their footing. When God says 'I will strengthen you', he is not asking you to summon courage on your own; he is promising to be the firmness underneath you.

- Where in my day today am I quietly bracing myself, and what would change if I believed I was not facing it alone?
- What is one 'door' I have been avoiding because I felt I had to be strong by myself?
- If God is offering to be the firmness underneath me, what could I stop carrying on my own strength today?
A prayer
Father, I am afraid of more than I let on. Thank you that you do not scold me for it, but come close and say you are with me. Be the strength under my shaking today, and hold me by your right hand when I take the next small step.
You are not doing today alone; the strength you need is being offered to you.
