Going deeper
A man walks out of a place where the doors were locked for years. On the outside, he notices something strange. His hand keeps reaching for a door handle that isn't there. His body still moves as though someone might tell him where to stand, when to eat, how long he may look at the sky. Freedom has been given to him, but it takes time for his shoulders to believe it.
Paul is writing to friends in Galatia who had come to know this same gift, and were slipping back toward the old locks. Some were telling them that grace was not quite enough — that they must add rule upon rule to be accepted. Into that pressure Paul writes plainly: for freedom Christ has set us free. Not so they could earn a place, but because a place was already theirs. Stand firm, he says. Do not put the yoke back on.
You may know that reaching hand. The gift is real, but the old habits of fear are slow to leave. Today, notice one small place where you brace for a verdict that no longer comes — and let your shoulders down. You are not on trial. You are free. Stand in it, quietly, as one who belongs.
ἐλευθερία
eleutheria · freedom, liberty
In the ancient world, eleutheria meant the settled status of a free person, not a slave. It was not a mood but a standing — a name you carried in the town square. Paul uses it to say your freedom is already true, given to you by another, and not something you must earn back each morning.

- What old yoke do I keep reaching to put back on, and what would it mean to leave it off today?
- How might I stand a little more freely in one ordinary moment this morning?
A prayer
Lord, thank you that the freedom you give is not something I must earn back each day. Where I still flinch and brace, teach my shoulders to rest. Help me stand firm in what is already mine, and to walk into today unafraid.
