New Every Morning

Today’s Scripture Lamentations 3:19-24the day’s verse: Lamentations 3:22–23 (ESV)

“The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Lamentations 3:22–23 (ESV)

Going deeper

Early in the morning, before the shop is open, someone wipes down the counter and sets out clean cups. Yesterday there may have been a spill, a burnt batch, a hard conversation. But the cloth still moves across the wood, and the cups still line up, ready. There is something quietly hopeful about a fresh start you did not have to earn. The day simply arrives, and it is clean.

These words come from Lamentations, a book of grief written after a city fell and much was lost. The writer is honest about the ache; he does not pretend it away. Yet right in the middle of the sorrow, he turns a corner. He remembers that the Lord's steadfast love has not run dry, that his mercies are not a finite pile that can be used up. They are new every morning, he says — delivered fresh, like light over the horizon, faithful and on time.

You may be carrying yesterday into today. Perhaps a failure, a word you wish you could take back, a heaviness. Hear this gently: the mercy meeting you this morning is not leftover. It is new. So let one small act mark it. When you next wash a cup, open a window, or take your first sip, let it remind you that today is clean, and you are met here.

A word in the Hebrew

חֶסֶד

chesed · steadfast, loyal, covenant love

Chesed is love that has decided to stay. It is not a passing feeling but a committed kindness that keeps its word, even when the other person has little to offer in return. For a reader who wonders whether they have used up their welcome, chesed says the door is held open by someone who does not change with the weather.

Questions to sit with

  • Where in my life am I treating mercy as if it were nearly used up?
  • What would it mean for me to receive today as genuinely new, not just yesterday continued?
  • What small morning act could remind me that I am met with fresh kindness?

A prayer

Father, thank you that your love has not run out on me. Meet me in this new morning with mercy I did not earn. When I carry yesterday's weight, help me lay it down and trust that you are faithful, again, today.

Carry this with you

Today's mercy is not leftover — it is new, and it is enough.

Soli Deo Gloria — to God alone be the glory.
