Going deeper
A woman at the counter tells you she nearly didn't come in. She had rehearsed a different name for herself all week — the one made from her worst mistake, the one people mutter behind her back. But someone had learned her real name, remembered it, and used it warmly when she walked through the door. Something in her shoulders let go. To be known by your name, not your record, is a small thing that can hold up a whole day.
These words in Isaiah are spoken to a people who had lost almost everything and felt forgotten. Into that fear God speaks. He does not begin with a lecture. He begins with tenderness: fear not. Then He gives three reasons, and none of them is about how good the people have been. He has redeemed them. He has called them by name. They are His. This is the voice of one who steps in as family and refuses to let go.
You may carry a name today that was handed to you by a hard season — failure, returner, the one who let people down. Isaiah offers you another. You are called by your name, and you are His. So try this: when the old label rises in your mind today, quietly answer it with these three words — 'you are mine' — and keep walking. Let that be the name you work under, the one you carry to the bus stop and the table and the tired end of the day.
גָּאַל
ga'al · to redeem, to buy back as kin
In old Israel, the ga'al was the near relative who stepped in when someone fell into debt or trouble. He paid the price, took the person back, and made them family again. So when God says 'I have redeemed you', He is not speaking as a distant official but as close kin who covers the cost Himself. You are not reclaimed as property, but welcomed home as one who belongs.

- What name have I been quietly living under, and where did it come from?
- What would it change in my morning to believe I am called by my own name, and His?
- Where do I need to hear 'fear not' spoken gently rather than as a demand?
A prayer
Father, thank You that You call me by my name and not by my worst day. Where fear has been speaking loudly, let me hear Your quieter word: I am Yours. Help me to carry that belonging into the ordinary hours of this day. Amen.
