Going deeper
This is a line from an old song of survival. The one singing it had known real danger and real fear, and had learned something in the middle of it: that God does not keep his distance from people who are falling apart.
Notice who is named here. Not the strong, not the impressive, not those who have it all together — but the brokenhearted, and the crushed in spirit. If you woke this morning feeling more like the second group than the first, this verse is looking straight at you. It does not ask you to tidy yourself up first.
And notice what is promised. Not a lecture. Not ‘try harder’. Nearness. To be near the broken is God’s instinct, not his reluctant duty. The very place you might expect him to step back is the place he draws closest.
קָרוֹב
qarob · near, close at hand
Qarob is the everyday word for what is close enough to touch — a near relative, a neighbour at your door. It is the language of kinship, not of a distant official. This verse does not picture God watching pain from a safe height; it places him qarob — right beside the broken, near enough to catch someone as they fall.
Questions to sit with
- Where am I tempted to think I must be ‘together’ before God will come near?
- What would change today if I believed my broken places are exactly where he draws close?
- Who around me is quietly crushed, and how might I simply be near them today?
A prayer
God who stays near, thank you that you do not back away from what is broken in me. Come close to the places I usually hide. Hold me steady today, and let me believe I am worth drawing near to.
You are not too broken to be drawn near — nearness is exactly what God offers the crushed.
